Five rounds of Super League action have already delivered a rollercoaster start to the season, with some clubs exceeding expectations while others have fallen behind.
Here at All Out Rugby League, the team delivers its verdict on each club so far, as Wigan Warriors lead the way at the top of the table and Huddersfield Giants remain the only winless side.
Bradford Bulls: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: The bookies’ tip for the wooden spoon have shut a few people up. They are great to watch and with a bit more luck could actually have won all five of their games so far. Hopefully, they can keep it going. Bullmania is back.
Josh McAllister: It’s fair to say all three promoted clubs have exceeded expectations in the new season, and Bradford are proving they’re not just here to make up the numbers.
Castleford Tigers: Fail
Dan Tomlinson: Let’s be honest: it’s not been good so far for Castleford. They look off the required standards to win games at this level. Thursday’s game against Bradford is massive.
Josh McAllister: It’s been a rough start for Ryan Carr and Castleford, with several players not yet meeting the required standards.
Catalans Dragons: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: Three wins from five isn’t bad going. Whether by choice or not, Catalans have certainly done things differently under Joel Tomkins, signing younger overseas players, and it could come up trumps the more they adapt to Super League.
Josh McAllister: Joel Tomkins’ Catalans have been impressive. As a rookie head coach, he’s won 10 of his first 23 games in charge in all competitions.
Huddersfield Giants: Fail
Dan Tomlinson: Yes, they’ve had injuries, but several clubs have had injuries. They’ve been so far off the pace. They look like a Championship club. And not even a top one. Worrying times. And sacking Luke Robinson won’t paper over the cracks.
Josh McAllister: A struggling club facing a significant challenge, particularly for whoever takes over following Luke Robinson’s sacking.
Hull FC: Fail
Dan Tomlinson: The Black and Whites got a pressure reliving win over Leeds on Sunday and now they need to back it up to turn a poor start around. This year was all about kicking on. They believe they can do it internally. Now it’s about proving it with action.
Josh McAllister: Will Pryce is a huge loss, but the win over Leeds has injected much-needed confidence and could prove a turning point for John Cartwright’s side.
Hull KR: Fail
Dan Tomlinson: There’s mitigation to their mixed start given the travel to Las Vegas and France and the high of the World Club Challenge. A welcome run of games at home could be telling.
Josh McAllister: A chaotic start to the year, and they’ve got work to do – particularly around ruck speed – to catch up.
Leeds Rhinos: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: It’s crazy what a couple of weeks can do. After Vegas, they looked the real deal. Its been a reality check since. But they’ll come good again.
Josh McAllister: I’m not buying into any talk of a Las Vegas hangover, but Leeds have struggled since their return. They looked red hot in Sin City.
Leigh Leopards: Fail
Dan Tomlinson: Injuries have crippled Leigh, but their discipline hasn’t helped either. There’s no panic, though, and they’ll come good when all of their stars return.
Josh McAllister: Adrian Lam called for patience at the start of the year, but Leigh will be keen to show rapid improvement. Big judgements loom around the round 10 mark.
St Helens: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: St Helens, injury hit or not, have beaten the teams that they have been expected to beat. The acid test is against those in the top six picture. And the next three weeks will tell us a lot.
Josh McAllister: Injury-hit, but Paul Rowley’s side are still finding ways to win – and producing some eye-catching tries in the process.
Toulouse Olympique: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: Two wins to start the year came against the grain. They’ve had three defeats since but given the level of the opposition, it’s hardly set the alarm bells ringing.
Josh McAllister: A couple of standout performers so far, including Olly Ashall-Bott and loanee Tyler Dupree.
Wakefield Trinity: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: Three wins has turned a tough start into a pass. They look well poised to kick on now. A big summer awaits.
Josh McAllister: There’s still plenty of improvement left in Daryl Powell’s side, but signs are there. Tyson Smoothy has been solid, while Jazz Tevaga is in everyone’s faces.
Warrington Wolves: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: Like St Helens, tougher tests await, but you can’t help but be impressed so far. The manner and feel of the club is completely different to last year.
Josh McAllister: Quietly going about their business and picking up wins under the radar. Steve McNamara is clearly having a strong impact on the club.
Wigan Warriors: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: Seven wins from seven in all comps. They’re now doing it without their big guns Bevan French and Jai Field, with some young stars stepping up. They are the team to beat right now.
Josh McAllister: Any side would struggle without two of their biggest star players, but Wigan continue to win – with academy products stepping into the spotlight.
York Knights: Pass
Dan Tomlinson: Two wins over the Hull clubs and ran Wigan close last week. There’s a lot to like about the York Knights.
Josh McAllister: Mark Applegarth has long been highly-rated, and he’s doing impressive work with York in their first Super League season.
