The 25th anniversary of the first Lord of the Rings film is to be celebrated with a huge show in Manchester featuring a live orchestra.

Directed by Peter Jackson based on the J. R. R Tolkien novel, The Fellowship of the Ring was first released in cinemas in December 2001. Starring an esteemed cast including Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Sir Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler and Viggo Mortensen, the movie has grossed close to $900m worldwide.

Set in Middle Earth, the first instalment in the trilogy follows a group of hobbits as they and a group of trusted allies venture outside their beloved Hobbiton with an all-powerful ring which can only be destroyed in the fiery and dangerous land of Mordor. The film won four Oscars after being nominated for a total of thirteen.

To mark 25 years since the release, a special show will take place at Co-op Live which will see the whole film screened and backed by a live orchestra who will perform the Academy Award-Winning score by Howard Shore. Two shows of The Fellowship of the Ring In Concert will take place on December 12 and will feature Manchester’s acclaimed Hallé Orchestra.

The film will be shown – with full original dialogue and subtitles – on a dramatic 60-foot screen with around 238 musicians made up of the orchestra, soloists and a chorus set beneath to add more levels to the hit film. The tour was originally due to just take place in London and Glasgow, but more shows have today been added in response to demand.

The Manchester shows will consist of a matinee and an evening show, with tickets available to purchase from 10am on Friday (March 27) via the likes of MyTicket and Ticketmaster. The show will last around three and a half hours, including a 20-minute intermission.

The shows are produced with CAMI Music, which is a talent agency which looks after artists including composer Shore. Whilst the artist will not be in attendance on the tour, it has been given approval by him – opposed to a number of other similar unauthorised shows.

Speaking about The Fellowship of the Ring In Concert, Howard Shore said: “The Lord of the Rings has been translated into 40 languages and has attracted a global fan-base, but the fan community doesn’t often have the opportunity to come together in person and coalesce around a performance at this high level.

“There is something unique and powerful that happens – a synergy is created in bringing together the music – live on a large scale, with the films, in a magnificent house.”
