Powys Teaching Health Board will be sending out a second mobile dental unit after it was confirmed that three NHS dental services in north Powys will stop as of April 1.

Along with this, two NHS Contracts for children have been ended in Builth Wells and in Crickhowell.

One of the dentists that has announced the end of its services is MyDentist in Welshpool where two clinicians decided to end their NHS contract.

The issue will be discussed at a meeting of Powys Teaching Health Board next week.

In the papers for the meeting, it notes that “we are aware of three dental practices in the north of Powys who have communicated with their patients indicating that from April 1 they will cease NHS dental care.

“We have recently been in discussion with all three, none of which have formally served contractual notice.

“We understand that this is causing a high level of concern for the population and we are in the process of preparing for immediate procurement should this be necessary.”

Along with this the papers confirm that there has been a change to the dental contract model this year.

The new contract model “does not allow for child only contracts” this will mean the contracts in Builth Wells and Crickhowell will cease.

Powys Teaching Health Board has confirmed that it has “put in place replacement activity with another contractor and our Community Dental Service”.

The Health Board has also “taken delivery of the second Mobile Dental Unit” and “recruitment is underway to enable services to be delivered where most required in the mid and north areas of Powys”.
