Adrian Lam is confident that Leigh Leopards will be able to announce a new deal for Gareth O’Brien in the not too distant future.
O’Brien has been one of Leigh’s leading lights this season, starring in the halves alongside Lachlan Lam and helping the club up to within touching distance of the top two with seven games remaining.
However, he is yet to sign a new deal for next year despite being in talks over his future for some time. Lam is keen to see him stay, of course, and he believes clarity on O’Brien’s future is now just around the corner.
“We’re pretty close, Gaz is one of my favourites,” Lam told Serious About RL when asked about the half-back’s future. “He’s such a composed player and also a leader.
“I think within our key meetings we have he delivers really important messages to players, but also on the field, he’s pretty close to perfect on how we want him to play.
“He’s been a big part of how we’ve developed as a team this year. He’s been at full-back, he’s been in the halves over the last 12 months, and the way he’s changed back in has been outstanding. I’m a fan of Gaz O’Brien’s.”
Leigh Leopards boss on Brad Dwyer
Brad Dwyer is another player off contract at Leigh this season and while the hooker was heavily involved at the start of the season, he hasn’t pulled on the leopard print jersey since May.
Dwyer penned a two-year contract with the Leopards in April last year and he’s made 38 appearances since. Unless something changes between now and the end of the year, though, this season will be his last at Leigh.
“He’s not contracted for next season at this point in time, but he has been in our 19 every week for the last six weeks, I think,” Lam said on Dwyer’s future.
“He’s still in the picture and obviously if he gets an opportunity, I’m sure he’ll do a really good job for us.
“He’s been patient in waiting for that time to come. He’s off-contract at the end of the year as we speak.”
