The 24-year-old joins on a short-term loan deal from League Two outfit Barrow, with Oliver Whatmuff absent on international duty.
After arriving at the Crown Oil Arena, Winterbottom commented:
“It’s good to be here, I had a good chat with Josh Lillis and the gaffer.
“I’m just happy that I can come in, help the team and be ready to contribute for a great set of lads.
“I enjoy shot-stopping, having the ball at my feet and playing.
“One of the final games of last season with Fylde was at Rochdale and I thought the atmosphere was brilliant.
“I’m ready to give everything I can.”
The shot-stopper, born in Preston, began his youth development with Blackburn Rovers from under-ten level and signed a two-year scholarship deal in 2017. In the final months of his deal, he was picked up by Liverpool’s academy and made two appearances in the EFL Trophy for the Under-21 side.
He was also named on the bench in the Reds’ Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa in late 2019 before signing his first professional deal the following July.
In January 2021, Ben signed for Brentford’s B team for an undisclosed fee. He was part of their London Senior Cup win and enjoyed a spell on loan at National League South side Welling United in 2023.
After being promoted to the first team, Winterbottom headed out on loan to the National League with AFC Fylde, where he impressed making 41 appearances. He made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the division, despite the Coasters’ relegation.
Following the expiry of his Brentford contract, he joined League Two’s Barrow on a two-year contract last summer, going on to make seven outings this campaign including an away win at Tranmere Rovers in December.
The loanee will wear the number 13 shirt.
Welcome to Dale, Ben!
