Moises Caicedo has already fielded questions about Real Madrid signing a new midfielder since the international break started, and now Fabrizio Romano shares his actual stance on a move.

It is approaching three years since 24-year-old Caicedo moved to Stamford Bridge from Brighton and already, the 58-time Ecuador star has clocked up 139 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions.

An incredible amount of game time played, highlighting not only Caicedo’s importance to Chelsea, but also his remarkable ability to stay fit and available. An underrated commodity in players these days.

While Fernandez might have had his head turned, Caicedo is firmly focusing on the next few seasons with Chelsea. Asked if he would be tempted by Madrid, Caicedo said he wants to become a Chelsea legend.

Not only will his reply have delighted Chelsea faithful, but it showed Fernandez how it is supposed to be done. Now, Fabrizio Romano has shared what Caicedo truly thinks about his Stamford Bridge future.

“Moises Caicedo. Midfielder from Chelsea. He was asked about the possiblity to go to Real Madrid. The question said Madrid asked was, Madrid are looking for midfielders, what’s your view on that?

“Caicedo said I am a Chelsea player, under contract, I want to become a Chelsea legend. Strong position from Moises Caicedo. It’s not about Madrid. Caicedo has a strong desire to be part of the Chelsea project.

“He feels the love of Chelsea fans, and Chelsea people. There is a very good connection. But Caicedo believes in the project. He could have joined Liverpool when he went to Chelsea,” Romano reported.

“But he feels there is more to do and more to win at Chelsea. He wants to become a Chelsea legend. It’s important to say that Madrid haven’t opened talks for Caicedo. Madrid have not made any contact.”

Moises Caicedo is the base Chelsea must build around

This summer is monumental for Chelsea, whether they are in the Champions League or not. The club need a new goalkeeper, they need a complete reshuffle in defence, and possibly replace Fernandez.

Even up top, they need a top-class striker to compete with Joao Pedro. Huge restructuring is required but at least there is one mainstay, one player they can rely on and that is Caicedo. An ever-present.

If Chelsea are to bolster their side to the lengths that takes them back into the top four, or even three this summer, it will be by using Caicedo as a starting point and going from there. Plenty of work to be done.
