A kangaroo known for wearing nappies “pulled a full-on prison break” from a petting zoo in Wisconsin, police said.
The hunt is on to find Chesney, a kangaroo that fled the Sunshine Farm Zoo in Necedah, about 90 miles from the state capital, Madison, on Wednesday.
According to social media, Chesney was startled by two barking dogs approaching his enclosure. It hopped over the fence and has not been seen since, police said.
According to a post on the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, the kangaroo was last seen “bouncing through the area of 23rd & 9th [street] like he’s training for the Olympics”.
“His owners are out searching with a drone, which feels like peak 2026 energy – but honestly, whatever helps get this handsome guy home,” the post continued. “Most importantly, Chesney is likely scared, so please be careful with him.”
It was not wearing the nappy at the time of the escape.
‘They bring so much love to the community’
According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, Chesney was spotted by the drone on Wednesday, but was spooked by its light and fled.
There was a second sighting on Thursday, but by the time owner Debbie Marland was tipped off as to the kangaroo’s location, the 16-month old had fled.
Chesney and another kangaroo are taken to nursing homes to cheer up residents. “They bring so much joy and love to the community,” Ms Marland said. “They’re wonderful animals.”
Kangaroos can reach speeds of up to 30 mph, and Ms Marland pleaded with anyone who saw Chesney not to approach the creature, because it is easily scared.
Writing on the Sunshine Farm Zoo’s Facebook page, she said: “He is super fast and if seen [it is] best to just call. He is not mean or dangerous but very scared, calling him should not scare him but definitely don’t chase. The calmer you stay the calmer he will stay.
“I have seen a couple of posts saying that he’s here and there. I’ve also seen some horrible ones saying that he had passed away.”
The “wanted picture” put out by the sheriff’s office shows Chesney wearing a denim nappy, however it was not wearing it when he made his escape, Ms Marland, told The Telegraph.
“He only wears a diaper when he is in my home, because you can’t potty train a kangaroo.”
