A Derbyshire town is set to benefit from a new neighbourhood health centre next year thanks to Government funding.
Long Eaton has been named as one of 27 locations to receive a neighbourhood health centre, which is an initiative backed by £50 million of Government funding.
The health centre will allow patients to access a range of health services under one roof, including urgent treatment, GP and pharmacy services.
In time, centres will also include wider services like debt advice, employment and family support and other voluntary sector support and will be open 12 hours a day, six days a week.
The centres are set to open by 2027, with the Government pledging to open 250 of these centres until 2036.
Health Minister Stephen Kinnock said: “This government is transforming healthcare, so the NHS works around the lives of patients – not vice versa.
“We’re rolling out neighbourhood health centres across the country by repurposing and improving local buildings, first targeting the communities that need them most.
“These one-stop-shops will help end the maze of referrals and repeated conversations, treating not just poor health but the causes of it too.
“As we rebuild our NHS, our mission is to shift more healthcare into the community, while delivering easier access to care, improved outcomes for patients and better value for money for the taxpayer.”
Erewash MP Adam Thompson added: “When the government announced the NHS Neighbourhood Rebuild fund I was determined Erewash should be at the front of the queue.
“The Labour Government has made great strides in cutting NHS waiting lists across the country, to get patients seen faster but we have to modernise the way our NHS delivers care if we are to get the NHS back on its feet.
“Too many people are passed from GP to hospital for checks and treatments which can be delivered closer to home.
“This investment will help create the space to deliver more services in Long Eaton.
“But the fact staff in Erewash have been recognised as ready and willing to make the shift to a neighbourhood model of care is just as significant.
“I’m really proud that NHS staff in our town have been recognised as pioneers in this way.”
Claire Fuller, NHS England’s national medical director, said: “Neighbourhood health centres will make it easier for people, particularly working-class communities, to access more joined up care closer to home.
“By bringing GP services together with a wider range of tailored support, we can help people to get the right care more quickly, close to home, while avoiding unnecessary trips to hospital.”
