A crowd of 80,581 watched on as Newcastle United stars tried to cement their place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup

Harvey Barnes came off the bench for England in their draw with Uruguay.

It was a proud night for Newcastle United as three Magpies pulled on the red shirts of England beneath the famous Wembley arch.

As the second half played out beneath the lights at Wembley, and amid the sound of the England band’s trumpets, it was a special evening for Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Harvey Barnes as they represented Newcastle for their country against Uruguay, even if it ended in a frustrating draw.

Given Anthony Gordon, Livramento, and Hall have already graced the big stage with the Three Lions in the Thomas Tuchel era, this was not exactly a first. But multiple call-ups for Newcastle, with the trio plus Dan Burn, Barnes and Aaron Ramsdale, all in the squad, is a sign of progress at St James’ Park.

The gloss was taken off for England as Uruguay forced an equaliser in stoppage time, as Ben White collided with Matias Vina before the German referee Sven Jablonski pointed to the spot after a VAR check in the 93rd minute.

Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde made no mistake to beat James Trafford at the death.

Here’s how Newcastle’s Three Lions fared at Wembley:

Tino Livramento 8/10

Is Tino Livramento’s slot at right-back with England his to lose ahead of the World Cup?

With Kyle Walker retired, Livramento got a full 90 minutes to show what he can do in front of Thomas Tuchel and, in truth, barely put a foot wrong.

Always hungry for the ball and the fact Phil Foden was turning inside and looking for the Newcastle full-back spoke volumes of how highly valued the Toon star is in the England camp.

The Man City star’s eagerness to utilise Livramento was noteworthy in the first half but any hopes of striking a rapport with Noni Madueke were dashed on 38 minutes when the Arsenal star went off with a knock before being replaced by Jarrod Bowen on the right.

Livramento picked up his fourth England cap with his Toon team-mates watching from both the bench and the stands. Indeed, Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Aaron Ramsdale were named as substitutes and Blyth battler Dan Burn was an interested spectator from the stands.

Livramento went down on the half-hour mark with a knock on the knee after a late challenge by Rodrigo Aguirre, but he was soon back on his feet and looking for a piece of the action with an overlapping run down the right.

Livramento allowed Maximiliano Araujo a slight glimpse deep in the England half on 36 minutes, but made no mistake with a crisp challenge as he took no chances. The 23-year-old was back out for the second half after a goalless opening 45 minutes with no big chances created by either side.

Foden went off for Cole Palmer before the hour mark, leaving Livramento with both the Chelsea man and Bowen to try to pick out on the right. Midway through the second half, Livramento went down holding his ankle after a challenge from Real Madrid star Federico Valverde, but he got back on his feet.

Late in the game, as the South American outfit pushed for a winner, Livramento made a timely block to preserve a score draw.

Lewis Hall 7/10

The Toon left-back took his place on the hallowed Wembley turf mid-way through the second half and replaced Djed Spence for his first cap in two years after injury woe. He had 21 minutes to get things going with Barnes down the left and transfer club form to the big international stage.

A couple of blocks and interventions after coming on, but did not get the opportunity to demonstrate much of the attacking play with just two touches in the opposition box.

Harvey Barnes 7/10

This was Barnes’ first taste of England action since 2020 when he made his debut against Wales. Having resisted the chance to play for Scotland at the World Cup, a late call-up after an injury to Eberechi Eze offered him a Three Lions audition.

Barnes didn’t take long to have some type of impact as he managed to get a flick across the face of goal from Cole Palmer’s corner. With the ball creeping towards goal, Arsenal’s Ben White tapped home on the line before Barnes joined the celebrations.

A goal would have been nice, but Barnes has finally left the one-cap wonder club and has another game to attack before the final squad is named. He could be an option for Tuchel this summer.
