The wizarding world of Harry Potter just got bigger thanks to HBO, and season 2 could arrive sooner than people think.

Harry Potter has become a global phenomenon with the original eight movies collectively grossing over $7 billion at the box office. Across 10 years, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Tom Felton, and more brought the series to life, and now HBO have their own plans to adapt J.K. Rowling’s fantasy book series.

The Times of London spoke with HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, who revealed that, despite initially saying the series won’t release annually, not all is doom and gloom.

“Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing. It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive. But … they’re writing the season two now.”

Recently, Bloys made it clear in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the series won’t be released on an annual basis as it’s “just not possible.” But with the new update, it suggests that fans of Harry Potter won’t have to wait too long until they see season 2. Writers have already begun developing a script for season 2, which will follow book two, titled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

The HBO series has a completely revamped cast, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.

The trailer for season 1 of Harry Potter showed that the first season is based on the book The Sorcerer’s Stone and will follow book one in an apparently “more faithful” adaptation compared to the original movies. Harry will go from an ordinary boy in a dysfunctional and cruel family to finding out he’s a wizard and being shipped off to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The trailer also revealed that season 1 would be arriving sooner than thought, on December 25, 2026.

The trailer for Harry Potter’s season 1 has reportedly had more than 277 million views within 48 hours of its release, making it the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history. The buzz for Harry Potter and the Wizarding World is still alive and well, and fans are ready to see another adaptation of childhood classics.

HBO’s Harry Potter series will debut on December 25, 2026.
