Jim McMahon shared his criticism on social media and said he found it ‘baffling’ how some believe fly-tipping is ‘normal’ behaviour.
Mr McMahon posted a video which featured some fly-tipping dumped in a countryside area of Oldham.
The post said: “Stop trashing Oldham!

“Call out the selfish dumpers.
“Not a week goes by that there isn’t a mountain of household, commercial and builders’ waste ruining our borough.
“Added to the routine littering, it is making our country lanes, parks and open spaces dumping grounds. It’s not okay, and it’s honestly baffling that some believe it’s normal behaviour.”
His video saw him speak to the camera, with the rubbish piled behind him on the side of a small road.

Fly-tipping has been a problem in Oldham for several years, but in the first three months of 2026 alone, The Oldham Times has published almost 10 articles on the issue, its severity, and the impact it has on residents.
The articles include a hotspot which was targeted less than a week after being cleaned, residents calling it a ‘joke’, a councillor organising a clean up crew, and residents being left ’embarrassed’ at the state of the area they live.
In the video, Mr McMahon urged people to show more ‘care and respect’ to the area, and said outlined several changes which have been proposed at a government level to tackle the issue.
He said proposed changes include community service for fly tippers; making them collect their own rubbish, fines of up to £300, and penalty points on the licence of those who drive the rubbish to where it is dumped.

Mr McMahon also said that, at a local level, Oldham Council has relaunched the ‘Don’t Trash Oldham’ campaign, which aims to tackle fly tipping.
The MP added: “These new proposals from this Labour government are badly needed.
“Too many of our countryside areas are being used as dumping grounds by rogue developers, landlords, and illegal waste firms.

“This crackdown is a vital step to tackle fly-tipping and protect our communities.
“It is selfish, harms residents’ quality of life, and leaves taxpayers to pick up the bill.
“The message is clear: dump rubbish, and you will be caught, made to join clean-up efforts, and pay the price.”
