Jimmy Page has treated Led Zeppelin fans to the original home demo for the song that later became ‘Ten Years Gone’.
While the version that Page shared on YouTube is somewhat different from the full-bodied beast that appeared on Physical Graffiti, it makes for a fascinating listen that demonstrates the genesis of the track and how much of the song was already ready before being touched up by his Led Zeppelin bandmates.
Although it’s not quite clear why Page felt compelled to put out the demo, which he’s presumably been sitting on for decades, on a random day in March 2026, there are no complaints on our end.
Additionally, Page wrote in the YouTube description, “As a footnote to Physical Graffiti, I thought you might like to hear the original home demo, recorded in my studio at Plumpton Place of a piece of music that was going to surface as ‘Ten Years Gone’.”
He added, “I presented this rough mix to the band at Headley Grange in order to do this for real. Robert Plant came up with some lyrics for my music that were extraordinary and then we arrive at the song ‘Ten Years Gone’.”
Last year, to commemorate Physical Graffiti turning 50, Led Zepellin shared the four-track Live E.P., and released an updated 50th anniversary edition of 2015’s Physical Graffiti deluxe edition triple-LP vinyl set featuring the companion audio disc and a new bonus replica Physical Graffiti promotional poster.
The EP featured live recordings of ‘In My Time Of Dying’ and ‘Trampled Under Foot’ from their iconic show at Earl’s Court in 1975, as well as ‘Sick Again’ and ‘Kashmir’ from their performance at Knebworth in 1979.
In a retrospective review of the album, Far Out heaped immense praise on ‘Ten Years Gone’, writing, “The best moments on the record tend to come when the band are also working outside of their comfort zone. Of all of the grandiose songs on the record, ‘Ten Years Gone’ might be the most emblematic song of this era of Zeppelin.”
