One of the tallest players to represent the All Blacks, Josh Lord, has secured his future by agreeing to a contract extension with New Zealand Rugby until 2029.
The 25-year-old second-rower confirmed on Tuesday that he will remain with both the Chiefs and Taranaki, continuing his development in familiar surroundings.

Injury setbacks haven’t halted progress
Despite a career disrupted at times by injury, Lord has continued to earn selection at international level whenever available. His form this season has been particularly encouraging, playing a key role in the Chiefs’ strong Super Rugby Pacific performances.
He featured in four of his 12 Test appearances during last year’s northern hemisphere tour, including an influential showing in the win over Scotland, where his athleticism stood out with ball in hand.
Size and athleticism set him apart
At 2.03m, Lord is among the tallest players to ever wear the black jersey. His combination of height, mobility and physical presence makes him a major asset, particularly in the lineout and tight exchanges.
Only slightly shorter than former All Blacks locks Mark Cooksley and Dominic Bird, Lord continues to build a reputation as a modern, dynamic forward since making his Test debut in 2021.
Big years ahead on the international stage
Lord admitted that an exciting run of upcoming international events made the decision to re-sign an easy one. The All Blacks are set for a demanding schedule, including a tour to South Africa, the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, and a home series against the British & Irish Lions in 2029.
‘This is home’
“Hamilton, the Chiefs and Taranaki are home,” Lord said. “This environment has helped me grow both on and off the field, and staying here longer is the right move for me and my family.”
Born in Auckland and educated at Hamilton Boys’ High School, Lord joined the Chiefs in 2019 after impressing at provincial level with Taranaki.
Loyalty repaid after difficult periods
The lock also acknowledged the support he has received from the Chiefs throughout his injury struggles, including a serious ACL injury in 2022.
“They backed me early in my career and have continued to do so through the tougher times,” he said. “It’s a club I genuinely love representing—the fans, the jersey, everything about it means a lot to me.”
