The UK Post Office experienced a mass outage this afternoon impacting service and branches across the nation, according to reports filed by several users. In a statement on X, the Post Office wrote: “We’re aware of an outage impacting our branches. The issue is being worked on and things should be back to normal later this afternoon. Thanks for your patience.”

Downdector, a site allowing for the public to report issues and outages with a variety of services, shows that the first logged problem with the Post Office was at 13:35 today. Since then, thousands of Brits have reported issues with their mail branches, which suggest a wide-spread outage. Issues were flagged in Manchester, Birmingham, London, Burnley, Glasgow, Sale, Hackney, Croydon and Fulham.

Reports peaked at 14:45 when 1,230 people loggied issues on the site, with 88% saying there was a complete blackout.

One social media user commented in response to the Post Office on X: “All counters at mine closed. It is already later this afternoon.”

Another added: “I’ve visited multiple POs and been told that it’s a nationwide outage and all POs won’t be trading for the rest of the day.”

The mailing service has confirmed that “services are now back to normal” following the resolvement of an issue affecting branches.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “There was a major outage across the Post Office estate this afternoon. We are pleased to announce that service has now been restored to branches. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers and the operators of our branches.”

In a previous statement, the service confirmed the issue was “not a cyber-related issue” and they are “aware of what has caused this outage”.
