Ryan Hampshire playing for Wigan Warriors
Hull KR have signed former Wigan Warriors utility back Ryan Hampshire on a deal until the end of the season. Despite suggestions to the contrary, Hampshire has been on trial with the club in recent weeks and was given a chance to impress in the reserves.
Having come through that trial period and impressed, the 31-year-old has now been picked up on a short-term deal for the rest of the season. With Arthur Mourgue sidelined for another two months after surgery on a pectoral injury, Hampshire’s arrival gives head coach Willie Peters another option at full-back, while also providing further cover in both the three-quarter line and halves, in a similar way to Jack Broadbent.
Hampshire has not played Super league since leaving Wigan Warriors two years ago in what was his second spell with the club, having also spent time at the likes of Wakefield Trinity, Leigh leopards and Castleford Tigers.
Hull KR head coach Peters, said: “Ryan has come into the group on trial and has impressed us with his professionalism and attitude in training. “Ryan has earned this opportunity through training and his performances with the Reserves and the way he’s applied himself since arriving at the club. “He’s an experienced player who understands the game and can cover several key positions in the spine, which is important to us.”
