Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet gave his verdict after watching his side yield a 14-point lead in the final 10 minutes against St Helens.
Zach Eckersley’s try in the 67th minute put Wigan 24-10 up and even when Jackson Hastings scored in the 72nd minute, it seemed like it would just be a consolation for St Helens.
However, tries from Tristan Sailor as well as a 70-second brace from Hull KR loanee Bill Leyland meant that St Helens secured one of the most unlikely comeback wins in recent Super League history as the Red Vee won 34-24.
Those 24 points all came inside the final nine minutes of play, something that is so uncharacteristic of Wigan and when asked for his thoughts on the game, head coach Matt Peet agreed that his side should have been better late on.
Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Peet said: “I can accept that it was an intense game that was passionate and finished in an exciting manner, but we’ve got to look at some of the things that we did, particularly when we were up.
“We’ve got to be better than that, but also pay credit to Saints. They were backs to the wall today and they continued to move the ball and back their style and they deserved the win.”

Wigan Warriors boss rues discipline in shock St Helens loss
Asked what specifically went wrong, particularly given how late the St Helens points came, Peet pointed to the fact his side were unable to take advantage early on when they had the ball whilst also ruing the team’s discipline.
He said: “I think we never put our game together for long enough sustained periods. I think our attack was good but too often we were giving penalties away even when we were quite dominant in our defence.
“The penalties we gave away are a big part of it, but I never thought for sustained periods we were at it.”
It’s a defeat that comes off the back of a shock loss to Huddersfield Giants, something that many expected Wigan to bounce back and react from but the Warriors boss insisted that he hadn’t targeted his team talk around that.
“I didn’t talk about a response before the game,” Peet stated, adding: “It was more about looking forward to this and I knew this was going to be an intense game and I thought some things we did were a decent standard, but we didn’t sustain them for long enough.”
