Going out with your friends and family to the movies is back in a big way. And we have lots of wonderful films and studios to thank for supercharging the box office again.
Let’s not bury the lede: the domestic box office has roared back to life in the first three months of 2026, raking in a staggering $1.77 billion.
This marks the strongest start to a calendar year since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Hollywood really needed that. Everyone working in Hollywood really needed that. This all signals a robust recovery for the theatrical industry, as long as the trend.
According to data from Screendollars, this 2026 surge represents a significant leap forward compared to the stagnant recovery seen in 2024 and 2025. The industry is finally seeing the “meaningful step forward” that Cinelytic forecasted earlier this year, with 2026 currently on track to be the highest-grossing year of the post-pandemic era.
Let’s dive into how this is happening.
The Heavy Hitters of Q1
The first quarter of 2026 was defined by a diverse slate of films that drew audiences back to premium screens, like IMAX.
Of course, franchises continued to hold their ground, but the real story of the quarter was the massive success of original sci-fi and animated features.
Project Hail Mary (Amazon MGM): The undisputed king of the quarter, this Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi epic earned over $163.8 million in the domestic market alone. It set a record as the biggest original, non-franchise opening since Oppenheimer.Hoppers (Disney): The animated powerhouse secured the second spot with $138.5 million, proving that family audiences are returning to theaters in full force.Avatar: Fire and Ash (20th Century): Although it was released in late 2025, its “long legs” contributed $137.9 million to the Q1 total, pushing its domestic cumulative past the $400 million mark.Scream 7 (Paramount): The horror franchise reached a new peak, delivering a series-record opening weekend and finishing the quarter with $118.6 million. Why the Surge?
It’s so funny, but last week Ryan Gosling had a quote about Hollywood needing to make the kinds of movies that get people to the theaters.
Well, the first quarter is a great indicator that this is what’s driving this year’s releases.
We also saw movies that were IMAX, or that were only in theaters and not simultaneously on demand.
“The trajectory is seemingly improving in what will likely be the strongest DBO year of the post-Covid era,” notes Advanced Television, citing an 11% projected year-over-year increase for 2026.
These are the titles that have led the way.

The big question is, how can we sustain the progress we’ve seen at the top of the year to go through?
Well, I have some good news — 2026 has a lot of bangers. Not only are we going to get movies like The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the summer, but we have The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Moana (live-action) coming soon to maintain this momentum.
The goal is the elusive $10 billion annual threshold. If we get back there, I’ll feel like the healing after the pandemic has finished, and I think it will help studios continue to greenlight theatrical movies.
Summing It All Up
This is a hopeful post and one I am excited to expand on as the year continues. There are a lot of big titles and the potential to save a lot of jobs and greenlight even more movies.
