Lauren Price faces off against Stephanie Pineiro in Cardiff tonight with belts and pride on the line.
The two fighters meet at the Utilita Arena, with Price’s WBA, IBF and WBC belts up for grabs.
The 31-year-old Bargoed native has won all 10 of her professional fights after winning Olympic gold at the 2020 Olympics.
She faces Puerto Rican Pineiro tonight, with a vocal home crowd set to cheer Price on in the Welsh capital.
It has been a frustrating wait for Price to get back in the ring after so comprehensively beating Natasha Jonas nearly 13 months ago. But tonight promises to be a spectacle in a venue which holds 7,000 spectators – and live in front of the BBC cameras, too.
In and out of the ring, Price is handling momentous occasions. She is due to marry her girlfriend, Carlie Jones, in Abergavenny on May 30, following the couple’s engagement in April last year.
She told the Guardian: “She’s been in my life a really long time because I’ve known her since we were in the same school. She’s two years younger but she’s a good girl. Carlie’s got her own business, caring for old people in terms of going to their homes, and she’s very driven.
“She’s thriving and it’s nice to be with someone who is not part of boxing – so when I come home it’s not just boxing, boxing, boxing.”
Price’s backstory is made all the remarkable considering what she has had to go through in her life. She hasn’t had it easy.
Given up by her parents at three days old, she was brought up by her grandparents.
Her grandmother, Linda, is still alive and Price visits her in Wales whenever she is not training up in Sheffield.
“Nan is doing OK but of course she’ll be nervous all week,” she added to the Guardian. “She won’t watch the fight on TV, because she finds it too hard, so she’ll wait for a call from my auntie and then she’ll be able to have her cup of tea and a KitKat to celebrate.
“There’s nothing really to say about my biological parents. I don’t think about them. My father’s not here and when he passed away I was fine. I lived with my nan and grandad since I was three days old.”
Her mother hasn’t tried to contact her, she added. “No, she’s not very well.
“She’s in a mental [institution]. I prefer to think about my amazing grandparents who took me in, loved me, and told me that no dream I have is silly. I’m grateful to have been brought up with love. My nan is such a soft soul and I’m also so grateful she’s still in my life.”

British boxer Derek Chisora will face American Deontay Wilder at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, April 4.

She previously admitted in an interview with WalesOnline that she would have ended up in care if it wasn’t for her grandfather Derek and Linda. Derek passed away in 2020 aged 80.
“Put it this way, if they didn’t take me in at three days old I probably would have ended up in care,” she said.
“I probably would have turned out a wrong ‘un. They changed my life completely and supported me 100%. I’m very grateful for them.”
As for tonight, Price is expecting a tough battle.
“She’s strong, she’s tough. She’s going to throw the kitchen sink at me from round one,” she said.
“I do believe that I’m a level above. I think I’ve boxed better opposition than her before, but it’s all about Saturday night.
“I just want to go and put on a good performance in front of the fans.”
