The Wire ensured they would emerge from the Bank Holiday weekend at the summit of the still-embryonic table by hammering Leigh Leopards at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, while they along with Hull KR have played a game fewer than the rest of the competition.
And while his players continued to show positive signs, with the 42-6 victory ensuring they bounced back from their first loss of the year at Leeds Rhinos last time out in the right way, he says it is not yet time to get carried away.
“Not really,” he said when asked whether being top of this stage meant anything to him and his squad.
“We’ve been top before and it doesn’t really count for anything until its Round 27 so we’re not getting carried away. We’ll keep grinding away and doing our job.
“It’s important you don’t start falling in love with yourselves.
“We’ve been here before as a group but we’re more experienced now and I’m more experienced as a coach.
“It’s really irrelevant – everyone likes to talk about it but for us, it’s about consistently learning and getting better. It’s quite easy to stay away from the noise.”
Warrington ran seven tries past their neighbours in what was their first Super League victory over Leigh in nearly two years, with the Leopards having won all three league meetings last year as well as the final one of 2024.
And while they continued their rich vein of point-scoring form, Burgess was happier to see steps forward being taken on the other side of the ball as well as how they managed different in-game scenarios.
“I was happy with the performance for sure,” he said.
“We did a lot of things well and covered for a lot of things as well – we had a couple of HIAs and Jordy (Crowther) fractured his cheekbone.
“We had a couple of things to manage but we just got on with it.
“We didn’t really mention a response as we were calm about the game last week – there were things we could have managed better but in terms of a performance, we turned up and were there to win but we just let a couple of things slip.
“It was about learning rather than responding – the wind was pretty bad again today but we managed that much better.
“Defensively we showed a bit more spirit – we were where we needed to be so I was happy with that.”
Matty Ashton scored in either half for The Wire while Josh Smith, Joe Philbin, George Williams and Sam Powell also crossed.
There was also a try for James Bentley to mark the second-rower’s Super League debut for the club as he stepped into the shoes of the injured Kelepi Tanginoa.
It was an impressive all-round display from Bentley, and Burgess was quick to praise him as well as young front-rower Luke Thomas, who started the game in place of the injured Luke Yates.
“He was very good – he had a clean game and that was his challenge,” Burgess said of Bentley.
“We want him to express himself but also get everything done properly and stay within the spirit of the game.
“I was happy for Bentos – he’s had five or six weeks where he’s not been part of the group in terms of playing.
“Luke Thomas held his own there starting the game – everyone has their role to play and if they do that, it makes it much easier for the guy next to them.
“We’re aware that Leigh have got a lot of injuries too at the minute – we understand that so we’re staying grounded with what we’re doing and looking to improve.”
