After 36 regular-season events, the PGA Tour has moved on to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. First up, the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis.
The par-70, 7,288-yard course hosting the top 70 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings. That includes the tournament’s defending champion Hideki Matsuyama. No one has repeated at TPC Southwind since Daniel Berger did it in 2016-17.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, playing for the first time since winning the Claret Jug three weeks ago, went bogey free until his final hole on Thursday, signing for a 3-under 67 with birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 10 and 14 and bogey tap-in on No. 18. It was somewhat of a ho-hum round, but it puts him within five of the 18-hole lead.
A few hours ago, Akshay Bhatia went 4 under over his last three holes. Fleetwood’s close late in the day was almost as good. Fleetwood went 4 under over his last four holes, making birdie on Nos. 15, 16, 17 and 18 to get to 7 under and stake a claim to solo second after 18 holes.
Fowler entered the week 64th and knew he had some work to do to advance next week to the BMW, which takes the top 50 after Sunday night’s final round in Memphis. Fowler shot 4-under 66 on Thursday to open his St. Jude week, his scorecard featuring four birdies and 14 pars and most importantly, no bogeys.
He was tied for fifth and four shots off the lead after signing his card. At events like this, guys may need to not only scoreboard watch but also keep an eye on the projected standings.
“I know I need a good finish. I don’t know exactly where that is. Obviously the higher the finish, the better chance I have. A win would take care of a lot of things,” he said, knowing there’s still 54 holes left at TPC Southwind. “I mean, I know roughly, but I just need to go play some good golf and put myself where I’m in a position and have a chance to go win on Sunday.”
Fowler has six wins on the PGA Tour but none since the 2023 Rocket Classic. In 2025, he’s made 16 cuts in 19 outings but has just one top 10, a tie for seventh at the Memorial two months ago.
“I wish I wouldn’t have needed to play as much golf as I have, but that’s also at the same time helped me,” he said. “I’m glad the body is hanging in there and allowing me to play some golf, as well as my family traveling with me. We haven’t spent much time at home. I think I counted it up, we’ve had roughly about 11 days since the end of April at home. We’re going to see if we can extend that a little longer.”
It’s a British Invasion at TPC Southwind, as Justin Rose has tied fellow Englishman Harry Hall in a tie for second at 6 under. Rose’s 64 has him two back of Akshay Bhatia, who shot a career-best 62 earlier in the day.
Justin Rose had his best strokes gained off the tee round of the season today.
Rose on PGA Tour since Masters:
RBC-U.S. Open: 72.9 scoring, +32, -0.61 SG off tee/round
Last 3 starts: 67.8 scoring, -24, +0.67 SG off tee/round

“I think it’s bugged me a little bit that I haven’t been back to East Lake in a few years, so that’s definitely a goal of mine,” Rose said after his round. “We all know how important top 50 is. Top 30 is a little bit of a cherry on top of everything. That would be a big goal for me.”
As top-ranked Scottie Scheffler tees off on the first hole at 1:45 p.m. ET, let’s take a look at the biggest movers up so far on Thursday in the projected standings:

The big-hitting lefty closed eagle-birdie-birdie and signed for a 62 on Thursday at TPC Southwind to take the clubhouse lead. Bhatia had five other birdies on his card and just one bogey.
He has a pair of 63s this season but his round to open the playoffs is his best of 2025. In fact, it’s his career low. It’s also big seeing as it comes a week after he had to WD from the Wyndham Championship.
“I felt like I wasn’t putting great throughout the day, but then those last couple putts managed to drop,” Bhatia said. “All in all, I felt like iron play was nice. I just need to kind of clean up a couple things, like a couple wedge shots, and get a little more comfortable with the putter, but all in all, I felt like I was driving it nice.”
PGA Tour officials had to move the hole location slightly on the third hole at TPC Southwind after Germany’s Matti Schmid apparently damaged the cup with his approach shot on the 559-yard par 5.
Playing by himself as the first golfer of the day, Schmid went for the green in two and hit his shot 207 yards to within 5½ feet of the hole. He made the putt for eagle, but after he finished, the grounds crew had to come out and recut the hole. In the process, they moved the cup about one foot to the right to avoid the repaired area. There doesn’t appear to be any video of Schmid’s shot, so we may have to wait until his round is over to find out exactly what happened.

The project began in November when the front nine holes were closed. In January, the entire course was shut down. All 18 greens complexes and practice greens were completely rebuilt for the first time since 1988 and resurfaced for the first time since 2004. The tee boxes were resurfaced. Portions of the irrigation system were upgraded. The short-game practice complex has undergone a near-total overhaul.
“We completely blew up this entire area (the putting and chipping greens),” TPC Southwind general manager Larry Antinozzi said June 13.

Coming into Memphis, Matt Fitzpatrick was 41st in the FedEx Cup standings, meaning he had some breathing room to get into the BMW Championship, but couldn’t fall completely flat.
Early Thursday, he seemed not only determined to get into the field next week, but to play his way into the Tour Championship the following week. Fitzpatrick birdied the first three holes of the day to jump atop the leaderboard.
And Fitzpatrick has found his game at the right time of year. The 2022 U.S. Open winner has placed in the top 10 in each of his last four tournaments, including a pair of T-4 finishes at the Scottish Open and British Open.
Who’s in the field for the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship?
Well, you should know about a big name not in the field and that is one Rory McIlroy, who opted out. Rest of the top 70 will be there, including No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, his first tournament since winning the Open Championship three weeks ago. Xander Schauffele (3), Justin Thomas (4) and Russell Henley (5) will also be there. Cameron Young, fresh off his first-ever PGA Tour win will also tee it up in Memphis. There is just one rookie who made the postseason and that’s Aldrich Potgieter, who checks in at No. 43.

Hey, here’s a surprise: It’s gonna be warm in Memphis in August. (Insert sarcastic emoji here.) In 2023, on his way to victory, reporters asked Lucas Glover what he thought of the heat during the second round at the FedEx Cup St. Jude and he responded: “I didn’t get this wet in the shower this morning.”
It won’t be that hot today, but it’s gonna be another warm week.

What is the cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship?
We’re glad you asked because there is no 36-hole cut in the playoff events, but, there will be a cut from the top 70 on Sunday night as only the top 50 will advance to the second round, the BMW Championship. From there, only the top 30 will make the Tour Championship.
What is the prize money at the FedEx St. Jude Championship?
The total purse this week is $20 million with the winner taking home $3.6 million. Those numbers are the same as the eight signature events on the PGA Tour.
Weather forecast for Memphis for 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship
Death, taxes and scorching temperatures at the St. Jude. Memphis’ FedEx Cup playoff event is known for plenty of things, but the weather is absolutely near the top of the list. The heat and humidity make it a gauntlet for even the best golfers in the world. The past couple of years have seen a caddie need IV fluids, golfers drenched in sweat and even Lucas Glover sinking his hands into a cooler of ice water — just before he won the tournament in 2023.
