Championship club Whitehaven have paid tribute to a veteran forward who played his 100th and final rugby league game this past Good Friday.

Jordan Thomson signed off with a Cumbrian derby as the final game of his career with the match also being the 100th of his rugby league career.

It was a fitting final game as it pitted his current team Whitehaven against his former team Workington, though unfortunately for Thomson and Haven, they lost out in the all-Cumbrian clash.

Workington won 22-14 in what was Thomson’s 38th appearance for Haven across two spells, having previously made 62 appearances for Workington.

Thomson had started his career at Whitehaven back in 2019 but would soon join Workington, going on to become a regular through the 2022, 2023 and 2024 campaigns before linking back up with Haven.

Ahead of Friday’s derby the club confirmed it would be the 100th and final appearance of his career as they took to social media to reveal that Thomson would be hanging up the boots.

Speaking on the decision, Thomson said: “I have been struggling with a back injury and the commitment side of it and at this level, you’ve got to be both feet in and unfortunately as you get older, priorities change. I have a daughter and a young family.

“I still love the game, I still love rugby league but as a semi-pro I am stepping away.”

After the game, Haven shared footage of Thomson being presented with a signed shirt to commemorate his final appearance.

They said: “On Friday we said goodbye to Jordan Thomson as he made his 100th and final career appearance after deciding to step away from the professional game. We welcomed his family in the changing room before the game as he was presented with a signed shirt from his teammates.”
