A large and intense section of flame can also be seen.

The blaze is understood to have happened at a recycling centre in Brunswick Road on the town’s Cobbs Wood Industrial Estate. A total of 10 fire engines were needed to put it out.

Local historian Steve Salter was passing the scene in a car with his partner.

He told KentOnline: “It was very worrying. There was a thick plume of acrid black smoke. We kept the car windows shut to keep it away from us.

“We could already see the fire engines rushing to the scene. This is clearly a very big fire that would take some time to put out.”

The fire continued to be fought at 8.30pm.

A KFRS spokesperson then said: “People living near Brunswick Road in Ashford are advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke coming from a fire at an industrial waste site.

“Ten fire engines, a height vehicle and a bulk water carrier are at the scene, and crews are working to extinguish the fire.
