Coventry City will officially celebrate promotion, if confirmed, at the CBS Arena on the final home game of the season, in accordance with EFL guidelines.

The Sky Blues are agonisingly close to securing their return to top flight football after a 25 year absence, and could be mathematically over the line if they beat Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (12.30pm).

If they win and Millwall and Middlesbrough both fail to beat their respective opponents then they will have done it because Frank Lampard’s men will have 87 points and the other two wouldn’t be able to catch them with four games remaining. Only second placed Ipswich on 72 points, who still have seven games left to play and 21 points to play for, could then challenge for the title.

Millwall play at West Brom on Friday night while Boro entertain Portsmouth at 3pm on Saturday, so confirmation will have to wait until that game is concluded at the Riverside Stadium at around 4.45/5pm.

If both the Lions and Boro win their matches, and City also beat Wednesday then the Sky Blues will be all but mathematically promoted by virtue of their vastly superior goal difference, although the club are unlikely to celebrate until it’s officially over the line in terms of the points tally.

However, once confirmed, City could be awarded a trophy after the Wrexham game at the CBS Arena on Sunday, April 26 (12pm), either the runners up silverware or the trophy for the Championship title. If the title is still not decided by that game, then the presentations will go to the last match of the season, away at Watford on May 2.

EFL guidance states that: “‘The trophy will always be lifted in season, and wherever possible, our preference is for it to be presented at a Club’s last home match of the season.

“If this isn’t possible, because the trophy isn’t secured until the final day of the season when the winning Club is playing away, in these circumstances we will work with the home Club to facilitate the lifting of the trophy at that game.”

If promotion is confirmed this weekend then a board marking the achievement is likely to be erected after the game at Blackburn Rovers on Friday, April 17, where over 7,000 fans will be making the trip for the televised game at Ewood Park.

Similarly, if Coventry’s players stay together on Saturday to watch the Boro game, Sky cameras could be on hand to film any potential in-house celebrations.
