Joel Tomkins is reportedly set to leave Catalans Dragons due to personal matters.
Catalans Dragons’ Challenge Cup exit to St Helens was overshadowed by fresh uncertainty surrounding Joel Tomkins, with assistant coach Ryan Sheridan addressing the situation post-match.
The news broke just hours before Catalans’ Challenge Cup quarter-final clash with St Helens, where the Dragons suffered a disappointing 36-4 defeat at the BrewDog Stadium.
Heading into the Challenge Cup quarter-final tie, Tomkins had already missed two matches – a defeat to Hull FC, and the French derby victory over Toulouse Olympique. Official confirmation on his future is expected in the coming days.
Sheridan admitted it has been a challenging period for the club but stressed the importance of moving forward, while also expressing support for Tomkins, who is expected to leave the club due to personal matters.
“I think there’s been something out in the press. It’s a personal matter with Joel,” Sheridan said.
“It’s been difficult. We’re thinking about Joel and the situation around him.
“We’ve tried to move forward as a group and manage it as best we can, but it has been tough. Subconsciously, it affects you as players and as a group.
“We’re a new team trying to find the right balance, and we’ve got to work through that. It’s going to be a challenging year, but we’ll keep working hard.”
Sheridan also revealed that internal discussions have yet to progress, as he continues in interim charge over the past month.
“There’s been nothing as of yet. This has been going on, and as staff and playing group we’ve tried to support Joel as much as we can and do our jobs,” Sheridan said.
“I’m not sure what’s happening behind the scenes. We’ve got to put our hands up and work hard.”
