Coronation Street fans said they were ‘bawling’ as a former Weatherfield legend was remembered as a fire broke out inside Roy Cropper’s beloved home and business.

He’s been a stalwart of the cobbles for 30 years, and those who follow the ITV soap were left fearing the worst for the Roy’s Rolls owner after Mal Roper’s twisted revenge plan saw him almost fighting for his life.

During Sunday’s (April 12) edition of Corrie, Roy and his niece, Nina Lucas headed off on a bat watch but Roy admitted to feeling unwell during the trip and returned home to find the cafe had no electricity. Making the decision to close up early, an under-the-weather Roy headed to bed.

What he didn’t know was Mal, who had decided to leave after a series of fake reviews were left by Jodie Ramsey about his business as she stuck up for Bernie Winter, who he’d been tormenting for months, was watching from a distance.

As Roy lay in his bed, Mal let himself into the cafe and set the place alight. Outside, Bernie, her husband Dev Alahan, and neighbour Brian Packham watched on as dark plumes of smoke billowed out of the cafe flat’s windows while a smoke alarm blared. It wasn’t long before a panicked Carla Connor arrived on the scene.

The Underworld factory boss, who sees Roy as a father figure, was reassured that Roy wasn’t home, as he’d headed out to a bat convention with Nina. Worried, she repeatedly called Roy before crying: “His things! I wish they’d hurry up. I mean, he’s not into his possessions, is he all Hayley’s things are up there, his trains… His whole world’s in that flat.”

While she tried to get a hold of Nina instead, Jodie appeared and realised what was going on, rushed towards the cafe and let herself in, explaining Roy had returned early and was inside. She ended up running straight into danger and, as Carla was stopped from following her in, Jodie found Mal inside, throwing petrol around, blaming Roy for him even coming to Weatherfield in the first place.

When Jodie asked if it was his plan to kill him, it was clear Mal didn’t know Roy was home, and, springing into action, he helped Jodie rescue Roy.

But while fans were clearly worried for Roy, other Corrie viewers were left feeling emotional by Carla’s mention of his beloved wife, Hayley, who died in the arms of her husband in January 2014 after taking her own life rather than enduring the final stages of pancreatic cancer.

Roy means the world to Carla and it all echos back to Hayley, she would’ve run in there #Corrie #Swarla.” @carrlaconnor commented: “Anyone else feeling emotional about the fact that, before she knew roy was trapped inside, carla’s first thought was about all hayley’s stuff still in the flat? all roy (and carla) have left of hayley, going up in smoke right in front of her eyes…….. cool!”

@caarchelle posted: “One of carla first thought being about hayley’s stuff made me bawl my eyes out, bc these are the last memories roy and her have of hayley, would destroy them both to lose that@Elphaba73 added: “Oh poor Roy [single tear crying emoji]. Carla mentioning Hayley’s things [single tear crying emoji].”
