Coronation Street‘s Carla Connor and Lisa Swain’s romance has been rocked by a return from the dead, a string of medical emergencies and even kidnapping and imprisonment. Now as they prepare to marry and live happily ever after, a flood wrecks their wedding venue.

“Carla feels absolutely devastated, or as she might put it, ‘well narked’,” says Alison King who has played the factory boss since 2006. “This is supposed to be the best day of her life, and now it’s all ruined. She is not happy, and it’s everybody’s fault, even though it’s not.”

However, Lisa refuses to miss out on their special day, and she takes action to make sure she and Carla get married after Carla’s nephew Ryan tells her that getting married matters more than the perfect wedding day.

Vicky Myers, who plays Lisa, explains, “It’s something that Ryan says that Carla had said to him. It’s basically about how Carla just wants to marry Lisa. Any hour, any venue will do, and that sets something off in Lisa. She realises they don’t need all of this big fuss, which Carla didn’t particularly want anyway. It was more about the intimacy between the two of them. So Ryan and Lisa try to set some wheels in motion and recover the day.”

With help, Lisa surprises Carla and the wedding goes ahead. But just as the happy couple are celebrating, there’s a dark twist that will impact the whole street.

A flashforward scene in February revealed that a brutal murder whodunnit would rock Weatherfield. The scenes showed Lisa’s daughter Betsy [Sydney Martin] finding a body on the day of her mum’s wedding, before being questioned by police. As Lisa and Carla’s wedding celebrations continue into the night, viewers will hear a terrifying scream as the murder takes place. Viewers also find out the identity of the victim.

Carla actress Alison, 53, was thrilled to find out her character’s happy occasion would be rocked by a death in true soap style. “I thought it was great!” she says. “Now that’s drama. That’s how it has to be.

“I’m just glad it wasn’t our drama and that the wedding happened and they had their day!” With Betsy discovering the body and Lisa being in the police, the murder will have a deep effect on the couple.

“It will also be a trial for Carla and Lisa at the start of married life as Betsy is the one who finds the body so they have got something difficult to deal with from day one of married life,” says Vicky, 50. “As a family after what they have been through I think they feel very equipped now to be able to deal with things as a team.”

From the Corriedale crash that left Lisa seriously injured, to Carla’s kidnapping at the hands of Lisa’s evil ex Becky, their two-year romance has been an eventful time for the couple. However, Alison and Vicky both agree their characters have found their soul mate.

“Carla loves Lisa Swain because she’s like sweet and sour and she sees that in herself as well, so she likes the vulnerable side, and the fact that Lisa has shown that to her,” says Alison. “Lisa was a huge turning point for her. The fact that she liked her, like that, is everything, really. It was the person, not the gender, that didn’t come into it. They don’t need each other. They chose to be together.”

Vicky reckons it’s Carla’s loyalty and her bond with Lisa’s daughter Betsy that has kept the couple united. “There was something instantly between the two of them,” says the actress.

“Lisa respects Carla, she respects her as a businesswoman and as a woman in general, the loyalty she has to her family and friends, and the way that even in the first conversation that they had, Carla was interested in Lisa’s own daughter. They trust each other and they talk. They look out for each other and they will stand by each other.”

While this is Lisa’s first wedding in Weatherfield Carla is no stranger to soap nuptials. When she joined the soap Carla was married to Paul Connor, before she wed villain Tony Gordon in 2008. Carla has also married Peter Barlow twice, in 2013 and 2021, while she briefly married Nick Tilsley in 2016.

Alison says this wedding is different to Carla’s previous nuptials. “I was relieved it wasn’t a big wedding and there was no big dress for Carla this time,” shares Alison. “The surprise reception at Underworld is Carla’s favourite bit.

“She likes to feel that even though she shouts at everybody, they still love her – all the workforce. So she likes to be part of something. Those factory workers are Carla’s family. It is her safe place.”
