A Hitchin family has completed a striking home renovation, blending smart design with practical living — and showing how a clear vision, the right team, and hands-on project management can deliver impressive results.
From early ideas to construction
The journey began back in March 2024, when the homeowners first started shaping their ideas. Working with Hitchin-based architectural practice MSAD, they developed a design that combined aesthetics with everyday functionality.
By June 2025, the project moved into construction. MSAD’s Mark played a key role in guiding the project through certification and the tender process, helping the family line up the right contractors and ensure everything was ready to go on site.
A collaborative approach
In a slightly different approach to many builds, the family took on project management themselves, staying closely involved throughout.
Communication was key — with a dedicated WhatsApp group set up with the builders, ensuring quick decisions, updates, and a smooth workflow across the project.
As the homeowners put it: “It was really good working with Mark.”
Mark Scott from MSAD said – “I’ve lived in Hitchin for almost 25 years now and I’ve seen how the limited amount of housing stock on the market, cost of moving and increases in living costs, is leading to people explore the options of creating their forever home from their existing property. If you’re not sure how and if home improvements are right for you – drop me a line and let’s have a chat”

Transforming the space
The finished renovation, completed in December 2025, has dramatically changed how the home feels and functions.
Key features include:
A two-storey transformation, maximising space and layoutA large rear extension (around 4.5 metres) opening up the propertyA bright open-plan kitchen and living area, designed for modern family lifeSkylights bringing in natural light and creating a sense of spaceA newly designed patio area, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor living
The result is a home that feels both bigger and brighter — while remaining rooted in the character of the original property.
Smart, future-focused upgrades
Alongside the aesthetic improvements, the renovation also included solar panels, helping future-proof the home and improve energy efficiency.
MSAD’s familiarity with the property also helped shape a design that worked with — rather than against — the existing structure.
Adding value as well as space
Beyond the lifestyle benefits, the project has also had a clear impact on the home’s overall valuation, underlining the long-term value of a well-executed extension and redesign.
This Hitchin renovation shows what’s possible when clear vision meets good design and strong collaboration.
With expert guidance from MSAD and a hands-on approach from the homeowners, the result is a modern, light-filled space that works for everyday life — and adds lasting value.
