Jaron Ennis looks set for a huge showdown in the very near future.
Ennis is the former unified welterweight world champion, but recently vacated his WBA and IBF belts in order to make the move up to 154lbs.
Boxing fans are hoping he will be involved in some big match-ups in his new division, and it appears that one of them is set to happen straight after his next fight.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed to IFL TV that Ennis has signed a contract to take on KO artist Vergil Ortiz, assuming ‘Boots’ first wins his debut at super-welterweight later this year.
“He wants to move up and have a real solid good fight, and then he will fight absolutely anyone. Jaron Ennis in his deal with us, in his extension, part of his deal is that he’s signed to fight Vergil Ortiz.
“When we sat in the office with Golden Boy and DAZN about three weeks ago, not signed from their side as well, but everything discussed and agreed, Jaron has actually signed a contract form to fight Vergil Ortiz, done.”
Hearn then revealed when and where the fight could take place.
“To be agreed between Golden Boy, it will be January or February. It does really well in Dallas, it does really well in Philly, I think it’s also a great Vegas fight. The plan is for Vergil to have his fight in October then we’re in for that fight, so you don’t have to worry and you don’t have to wait for that fight.”
Ortiz holds an unbeaten record of 23-0, with 21 of those wins coming by knockout. His last victory came in February when he defeated Israil Madrimov by unanimous decision. His promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has also said the fight with Ennis is ‘inevitable.’
