After Alien: Romulus had a successful theatrical run where it made more than 4 times its budget, and also has been doing well on streaming, it quickly got the green light for a sequel. While the news has been sparse, with the biggest surprise being that Fede Alvarez won’t be directing the sequel, instead he’ll be producing, we’re still waiting for the confirmation of a new director, that aren’t rumors, and when film production will begin.
There have been recent rumors and speculation that David Jonsson won’t be returning for the sequel, despite his previous interviews showing how excited he was to work on the next Alien project. A change of plans was always possible, but a new interview Collider had with Jonsson while he was promoting his new film Wasteman, seems to dissipate those fears:
Whatever it is and whenever it happens, I can’t quite say.
Andy (David Jonsson)
He further explains:
Well, because it’s a world with brilliant characters. It’s a world that is thrilling on camera, thrilling on screen, and in my opinion, and I say this having done Romulus, which is a project that I’m really proud of, Cailee [Spaeny]’s really proud of, and everyone who worked on it is really proud of, is that those projects that help reinvent what cinema is and what it can be are the ones I always want to be involved in, and I think that this is one. With us being a predominantly younger cast, it’s completely changed what the Alien universe was, and opened up the possibility for what it could be. I think that that’s quite exciting. I think that that’s what Earth did, as well, and ours.
Even though we haven’t really gotten any new details on the sequel, these comments seem to heavily suggest he’s still involved. What do you think, will Rain and Andy continue their story in the sequel as was originally suggested by Fede? When do you think we’ll get official news on a director for the film and the start of production? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
