Amazon says the new device is its ‘fastest’ ever.

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick will soon be obsolete with the announcement of a major update to the flagship streaming device. The retail giant has just revealed plans to release a new generation of Amazon Fire TV Stick HD.

The new and improved gadget will come with a host of new features when it’s released on April 29, with customers able to pre-order now for £39.99. However, existing and older Fire TV Sticks in the range will still be functional following the launch and other models remain available for sale such as Fire TV Stick 4K Max.

The new HD model is touted as the ‘fastest HD streaming stick’ ever, turns on and opens apps 30% quicker than the previous generation. With it, users can navigate the streamlined platform with dedicated content categories, pin the best streaming apps and receive personalised recommendations from Alexa+.

The Fire TV Stick HD is also the slimmest device yet, with a 30% narrower frame, making it more portable and easier to slot into an HDMI port. The gadget provides quick and easy access to countless streaming apps, including Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+, plus free-to-air content from BBC iPlayer and many more.

This means users have access to a library of thousands of new and classic films and TV series in a single device. Amazon has also confirmed it will add a new Adaptive Display setting to the Fire TV Stick HD in the coming months, making text, menus and content easier to see and navigate.

Amazon has unveiled a new generation of its Fire TV Stick HD to launch on April 29.

This feature can be activated to increase the size of smaller items, such as text and menus, while scaling up larger items, like content artwork. Amazon’s Fire TV Sticks aren’t the only streaming devices on the market, with rivals such as the Roku HD Streaming Stick offering similar features for a lower price.

Currently £29.99 at Argos, this model provides more than 500 free HD TV channels showing news, weather and sports, plus the usual major streaming apps. Elsewhere, the Sky Glass range also provides both TV and streaming apps without the need for additional gadgets, with monthly prices starting at £6 when taken with a Sky TV subscription.

While reviews for the new Fire TV Stick HD are yet to be released, the current generation has racked up more than 23,000 reviews with an average 4.7-star rating. One five-star review says: “Great piece of kit. Everything you need at your fingertips and very easy to set up on your TV. Should have bought one a long time ago.”

“Great piece of kit. Everything you need at your finger tips.”

Another says: “Does the job. I now get live TV and a large selection of services to a TV that can’t get a normal terrestrial signal. Price is reasonable. Very good HD quality and would buy again.”

However, the same buyer found the setup ‘fiddly’, adding: “Setup was fiddly. It took numerous attempts before the Wi-Fi could be recognised and then had to set up numerous channels individually, but worth it in the end.”

Meanwhile, another happy customer said: “Fantastic product. Easy to connect, clear picture and lots of apps to select. Made my old TV smart.”
