Wakefield Trinity have been dealt two injury blows in their forward pack following the defeat to Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup.

Jazz Tevaga was undoubtedly the most talked-about player following that match after his incident with Wigan’s Liam Marshall.

After making a tackle, Tevaga’s leg was caught under Marshall’s body, causing extreme pain. As a reaction, Tevaga kicked out at the Wiganer, making contact and as a result was sent for 10 minutes in the sin-bin.

The Wakefield enforcer was handed a two-match ban following that incident, but head coach Daryl Powell has confirmed that he will be out for longer than that due to injury suffered in the tackle.

“Yeah, it is what it is,” Powell said regarding the ban. “I think he’s going to be out for longer than that with the injury that he sustained in the incident.

“That’s a four to six week injury, so the ban and is kind of irrelevant for Jazz now with that injury. I spoke about it last week and moved on from that now. I think Pittsy been doing an awesome job at 13 and he’ll continue to do that.”

Asked what the injury was specifically, he revealed: He’s hyper-extended his knee there. He had a scan, he’s in a brace at the moment. It might be four weeks, it might be six weeks.”

Fellow forward Isaiah Vagana has been in sensational form over the past few weeks, but he has unfortunately suffered “a couple of bits”, and is an absentee in this week’s squad to face Bradford Bulls.

Vagana has averaged over 90 metres per game this season, with his best game coming against Castleford Tigers where he ran for 157 metres.

The boss said: “He played on last week, but he had a bit of a shoulder problem and a bit of an ankle problem. He’s had scans. There’s nothing major in either of them.

“He probably misses a couple of weeks, just to get him sorted. He’s played massive minutes for us and he’s been phenomenal.”

Vagana has been sharing the back row position with Seth Nikotemo and Matty Storton, and the three have become quite a force for Powell’s side, something the boss will now have to navigate in the coming weeks.

“They’re both excellent back rowers [Storton and Nikotemo],” Powell added. “I’m looking forward to seeing both of them play. It’ll be a big miss for us, but these guys minimise that miss with how good they are.

“…Isaiah couldn’t play [through injury]. He needs a bit of time to recover. They’re not massive injuries, but he won’t be able to play.”

Wakefield Trinity welcome back prop for Bradford Bulls clash

In a boost to Trinity’s pack, Caius Faatili returns to the side this week after missing the last two.

Powell revealed that the 24-year-old could have featured last week, but he didn’t want to risk the forward given the rest of healthy bodies in the squad.

He said:  “He’s an awesome guy, isn’t he [Faatili]? He had a little bit of an injury there that he’s recovered from.

“He was pretty keen to play last week, but I felt like Trey [Lolesio] had been really good for us and deserved another go whilst Caius was maybe 85-90 per cent fit. I felt it was the right thing to do.”
