The organisation, Top 100 Golf Courses, behind the rankings says it pioneered national Top 100 lists for countries including England, Scotland, France, Germany and Spain, before drilling down to produce county‑level tables such as its new Cumbrian rundown.

It describes its work as “trusted and unbiased”, claiming its rankings are the most complete and extensive published either online or in print.

Its team is made up of experienced, well‑travelled golfers, including an editorial group of golf architecture historians, critics and enthusiasts, alongside a panel of active players who have competed or played widely at local, regional, national and international level.

The organisation is rolling out their new top 100 course rankings in the UK, and are releasing regional lists ahead of the full reveal on April 26.

The Cumbrian top five was released alongside other courses in the North-West, from Royal Birkdale in Liverpool to Delamere Forest in Cheshire.

The Cumbria list is as follows:

Silloth on Solway Golf Club

Seascale Golf Club

Appleby

Windermere Golf Club

Brampton Golf Club

Cumbria’s top ranked golf course, is also named as the fifth best in the North-West, with Seascale at 11 and Appleby at 14.

The website said: “At last, Silloth on Solway Golf Club’s reputation is becoming recognised more widely, thoroughly deserving its position in the Top 100 and one of England’s best links courses.

“It’s well worth the time (and the money) to get to Silloth and once you get there, you won’t want to leave. You are at one of the best value golf courses in the whole of the British Isles.”

Founded in 1892, with the help of Railway Company money, the course was originally designed by North Berwick professional David Grant.

Willie Park Junior subsequently carried out some modifications to the layout between 1898 and 1902.

As the website states, Silloth is regarded as a hidden gem amongst Links Golf Courses in the UK.
