Casualty spoilers follow.
Casualty has unveiled a first-look for its “nail-biting” new boxset, and has cast a former Emmerdale star in a new role. Titled ‘Lethal Legacy’, the latest saga in the long-running BBC medical drama begins on Saturday (25 April), and sees the team in grave danger.
Following the conclusion of ‘Learning Curve’, the staff members at the ED will be in mourning after the tragic death of Kim Chang. But they will soon be thrust into the action as a mysterious illness spreads across the department.

The boxset sees the military become involved, with former Emmerdale star Mark Womack – who played Mark Malone on the ITV soap – being cast as Jack Bard. His new character is billed as a “domineering” colonel, and is said to have ties to Flynn Byron.
Furthermore, Colonel Bard is said to have a “powerful hold over his subordinates” in addition to hospital staff, and he will “threaten to shake the bedrock of the ED when history begins to repeat itself”.
“Still reeling from a devastating loss, the team fights to survive as a suspected pandemic threatens to overwhelm the ED,” reads the logline for the 12-part boxset, which has been described as “nail-biting”.
“The hospital and its residents must face harsh truths as long-buried secrets resurface. Trouble within the military casts a shadow, and strained relationships come to the fore as the team struggle to keep the ED afloat as a mysterious illness strikes Holby.
“With a surge in patients with an unexplained virus and the ED buckling under the strain, the army is deployed to keep the peace, forcing Flynn to face a past he believed was long behind him.”

Elsewhere, Stevie and Matty turn to an “unexpected comfort” in the wake of Kim’s death, a choice that causes strife for Dylan. Jodie, meanwhile, uncovers a “disturbing truth” that is “buried deep within a local estate”, and risks everything to expose it.
With the trifecta of storylines being outlined, it remains to be seen just what Stevie and Matty’s choice of comfort is, and how Flynn is connected to Colonel Bard. Either way, the team must “pull together or watch everything unravel”.
Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.
