One of the biggest annual gatherings of the world’s greatest sportsmen and sportswomen took place Monday evening in Madrid at the Laureus World Sports Awards, where Carlos Alcaraz headlined the ATP Tour stars in attendance.

Alcaraz was named the World Sportsman of the Year for the first time, receiving his award from legendary football players Luis Figo and Iker Casillas.

Novak Djokovic was a co-host for the event alongside skiing star Eileen Gu. Djokovic is a five-time World Sportsman of the Year winner whose duties included honouring football great Toni Kroos for his Sporting Inspiration Award.

Sinner, who is the top seed at this week’s Mutua Madrid Open, was nominated alongside Alcaraz for World Sportsman of the Year. The other nominees were football star Ousmane Dembele, pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, motorcyclist Marc Marquez and cyclist Tadej Pogacar.

Joao Fonseca was nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award, which Formula One champion Lando Norris won. Fonseca began the 2025 season at No. 145 in the PIF ATP Rankings and climbed as high as World No. 24.

“It was an honor to be part of this night and among the nominees @laureussport 🙏🏻,” Fonseca wrote on Instagram.

Lorenzo Musetti was also in attendance at the star-studded event. The Italian is the sixth seed in Madrid, where he will try to claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title.

WTA World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was named Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year.
