Trump has often raged against wind turbines in Scotland – his anger reputedly stemming from a wind farm built in view of his Menie Links course off the Aberdeenshire coast following a court battle which ended in 2015.

Last week, the US leader posted on his Truth Social platform attacking UK energy policy, writing: “Europe is desperate for Energy, and yet the United Kingdom refuses to open North Sea Oil, one of the greatest fields in the World. Tragic!!! Aberdeen should be booming.

He added that the UK “should, DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! It is absolutely crazy that they don’t… AND, NO MORE WINDMILLS!”

In response, on Monday, activists with Greenpeace installed a mock windfarm on his Turnberry course in Ayrshire, alongside a sign reading: “Choose wind, dump Trump.”

The campaign group said three activists had carried six model turbines, each around 10 feet tall, along the beach to the course and erected them around the green of the fourth hole.

Lily-Rose Ellis, a climate campaigner with Greenpeace UK, said: “Donald Trump wants to keep us as lifetime members of his Gulf Club, where every time he starts an illegal war, bills go through the roof while his fossil fuel backers make billions.

“But we don’t need to stay stuck in his sand trap – the renewables Trump hates are the best insurance policy against the chaos he’s unleashed.

“Wind and solar farms built since the start of the Ukraine war have saved us £7 million every day since Trump attacked Iran and drove gas prices back up again. More clean energy that doesn’t rely on the Strait of Hormuz or Russian pipelines can save us money, boost our security and tackle climate change. It’s a hole in one.”

It is understood that, as the first golfers approached the first green, the activists dismantled the turbines and removed them.

It comes as new polling revealed that 48% of Scots believe renewable energy is the best way to cut energy bills moving forward , while just 13% backed more oil and gas extraction. 18% said nuclear power, and 14% said they did not know when polled by Survation from April 2-10.

A spokesperson for Trump International said: “This is a pathetic and profoundly ignorant stunt.”

Previously, the Turnberry site was the focus of pro-Palestine protests, leading to a number of arrests and court charges.
