Madrid is the first joint ATP Masters/WTA 1000 of the clay season, and the high-altitude courts at the Caja Mágica add an extra dimension that can catch players off guard. Conditions in Madrid can reward aggressive tennis, but experience on clay still matters, especially when points get physical. As always, LWOT has predictions for every match on the schedule.
ATP Madrid Masters Day 1 Predictions
Benjamin Bonzi vs Titouan Droguet
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Both players came through qualifying to reach this stage, which means neither has had much time to settle into the tournament rhythm. Bonzi carries a solid career win rate on clay, and his game, built around aggressive serving and clean ball-striking translates well to this surface. Droguet has shown he can compete on clay in longer matches, but Bonzi’s greater experience at this level and stronger serve should prove the difference.
Prediction: Bonzi in 3
Jenson Brooksby vs Emilio Nava
Head-to-Head: First meeting
This is an all-American clash between two players at very different points of their careers. Brooksby is a counterpunching baseliner with strong rally tolerance and excellent ball disguise, and he won the Houston clay title last year, which shows he can be a real force on this surface. He went 6-1 on clay in 2025, with five of those wins coming in that Houston run. Nava has shown flashes of quality, but clay is a different test, and Brooksby’s form coming in has been patchy. That said, his movement and grinding style suit the surface far better than Nava’s at this stage. Brooksby’s clay experience should see him through.
Prediction: Brooksby in 2
Damir Dzumhur vs Mattia Bellucci
Head-to-Head: Dzumhur 2-1 Bellucci
Their most recent clay meeting, at this very tournament last year, went Dzumhur’s way in three sets and the Bosnian arrives here in noticeably better shape than his Italian opponent. Dzumhur has been one of the more consistent clay-court performers on the fringes of the Top 100 this season, with strong results in Bucharest, while Bellucci has won just three of his last ten matches. Bellucci has the weapons to hurt anyone when he’s on, his lefty angles and heavy groundstrokes can be difficult to handle but his recent results don’t inspire confidence. Dzumhur’s form and the head-to-head edge on this surface both point the same way.
Prediction: Dzumhur in 3
Lorenzo Sonego vs Dusan Lajovic
Head-to-Head: Sonego 3-2 Lajovic
Sonego is competing in his second tournament since the Australian Open following a three-month absence due to a wrist injury, and while his opening win over Pedro Martinez in Barcelona showed he can still compete, Lajovic is a proven clay-court operator and is currently in solid form after coming through qualifying this week. His one-handed backhand and heavy kick serve are perfectly suited to these conditions. Sonego leads the head-to-head, but the match fitness gap is hard to ignore at this stage. Lajovic’s clay credentials and current rhythm give him the edge.
Prediction: Lajovic in 3
