Dino Prizmic on Wednesday completed his third win in as many days at the Mutua Madrid Open to set a second-round showdown with in-form fourth seed Ben Shelton.

The 20-year-old Prizmic eased past Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-4 inside Manolo Santana Stadium with a high-quality all-around display. The Croatian, who won two qualifying matches to earn his debut in Madrid, notched a single break in each set to earn just his second ATP Masters 1000 main-draw victory.

“It’s definitely a big thing for me,” Prizmic said after downing former World No. 6 and 2021 Madrid finalist Berrettini. “It’s a pleasure to share the court with him. Today I’m very happy about my performance, and also it’s a pleasure to play here on this centre court. It’s an unbelievable feeling.”

With his win, Prizmic set a maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with Shelton, who will compete in Madrid fresh from winning his first ATP 500 title on clay in Munich. Yet Prizmic will hope that already having racked up three wins in Madrid, including prevailing in a three-hour, 22-minute marathon against Christopher O’Connell in his first-round qualifying match on Monday, will stand him in good stead against the American.

“It’s very tough, because I already played two matches in qualies, but it is what it is,” Prizmic said. “I just tried, also yesterday, to prepare as much as I can. I’m happy about my game today.”

Prizmic won 79 per cent (26/33) of points behind first serves against Berrettini, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The Croatian, who took a set off Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Australian Open and competed at the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals, made his Top 100 debut earlier this month. After defeating Berrettini, he is up seven spots to No. 80 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Marin Cilic set another intriguing second-round matchup in Madrid after rallying past Zizou Bergs 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The former World No. 3 and 2014 US Open champion will next take on 27th seed and #NextGenATP Brazilian star Joao Fonseca for the first time.

In other early Wednesday play, Emiliano Nava, Ignacio Buse and Vit Kopriva each earned a straight-sets victory. Nava prevailed 6-3, 7-5 in an all-American battle with Jenson Brooksby to advance to face 14th seed Valentin Vacherot. In the same section of the draw, Buse downed Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-2 for the right to take on 21st seed and last week’s Barcelona champion Arthur Fils.

Kopriva raced past Zhang Zhizhen 6-2, 6-0 and will play 2024 champion Andrey Rublev for a third-round spot, while Damir Dzumhur also advanced. The Bosnian saw off Mattia Bellucci 6-2, 6-4 and will next play 29th seed Tallon Griekspoor. Meanwhile Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Alexandre Muller 7-6(3), 6-0: The German was a finalist in Madrid in 2023.
