Coronation Street made history yesterday with its first-ever successful wedding between two women, but another character seemed determined to steal the limelight – and it’s very on brand.
Carla Connor (Alison King) and Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) became the first women to tie the knot on the ITV soap after 65 years on air, making them the fourth female same-sex couple to successfully tie the knot on a British soap since same-sex marriage was legalised in 2014.
‘Soaps are extremely powerful mediums, and this wedding is a significant event to celebrate,’ actress Vicky Myers said. ‘The power of this storyline, centring on two women falling in love, despite surrounding circumstances, and becoming each other’s safe space, can spark essential conversations.
‘It’s particularly impactful that this happens during Lesbian Visibility Week. This relationship promotes understanding and change, especially considering the persistent issue of homophobia and the current gradual retraction of rights despite past progress.’
She went on to express how ‘honoured’ she felt that Lisa and Carla were able to get hitched in ‘a truly beautiful, history-making moment’.

‘They offer crucial visibility by confidently showing public affection, their life is not kept behind closed doors. Their frequent presence on screen holds the power to prompt lasting change.’
And this visibility is set to continue, with fans thrilled to notice that the credits of the episode had changed to reflect their new double-barrelled surnames.
However, they couldn’t help but notice something hilarious about the order of the credits…

Sally ‘The Ally’ was thrilled to have been left in charge of organising the wedding reception and ended up stealing the show on the dance floor, as fans pointed out her hilarious choice to stand between the brides.

It’s a running joke that Sally feels like she’s an honorary member of the LGBTQIA+ community – because she has a lesbian daughter, don’t you know? – so it’s only right that she was major player in getting Swarla down the aisle and giving them a day to remember.
Fans picked up on some hilarious moments, like Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) being smug that he got to be at the wedding instead of Sally.
A behind-the-scenes clip even revealed that a sweet kiss between Carla and Lisa didn’t make the final episode cut, because a take of producer Kate Brooks’ favourite moment of Sally shimmying out of her coat was included instead – and fans couldn’t even be mad.

Fans can’t help but suspect that Sally is playing the third wheel in Swarla’s relationship, with some even calling for her to strike up a friendship with Lisa.
It’s been confirmed that Brooke Vincent, who played Sally’s lesbian daughter Sophie Webster, is set to join Hollyoaks, ruling out a Corrie return, for the time being at least.
Could Sally be set to start referring to her besties instead of her daughter to boast about her deep understanding and connection to the LGBTQIA+ community?
