And Londoners and tourists must go on too despite strikes affecting their journeys.

Mette Andersen, 55, had landed at Gatwick Airport with her daughter Simone Larsen, 30, from Roskilde, Denmark, for a weekend in London.

They said they only found out about the Tube strike when they went down the stairs to the Underground.

Simone said they didn’t look how much a taxi would cost and were going to take a bus to their Marble Arch hotel.

She said: ‘But travelling on the red bus is a typical London experience so it’s okay.’
