Daniel Richardson, 35, was surprised to spot the mammal whilst he was walking home over the Old Bridge
A dolphin was sighted in Berwick on Thursday afternoon, with the video of the River Tweed being viewed over 25,000 times on Facebook. Daniel Richardson, 35, was surprised to spot the mammal whilst he was walking home over the Old Bridge.
Daniel, who is the son of Heron House Holidays business owner Elizabeth Johnson, sent the video over to his mum, who then posted it on her popular Northumberland-based account, where it has accumulated 26.4k views at the time of writing.
On making the fantastic discovery, Daniel said: “On my way back home, I bumped into one of my friends, and we saw a few tourists gathered at the bridge looking over the side at something, which itself isn’t unusual on a nice day.
“I have seen dolphins before in Berwick but the surprising thing was how far up the river it was. They’re usually much closer to the sea but this time it was next to the pier and the lighthouse which was really good to see.
“The last time my girlfriend was here she didn’t get to see any dolphins, so the main reason why I got my phone out and took the video is so that I could prove to her that they were actually there and that you could spot them.
“I don’t really bother with social media myself, so I passed the video on to my mum so she could post it when she asked me about it, and it’s great to see that it has had a lot of attention and some nice comments.
“It is a great advert for Berwick as a place, as it shows people that if they did come to visit then this is the type of thing that they could see, so hopefully it gets people excited.
“I would say that it was definitely a unique sight to see for where it was in the water, and it is also a rare treat to get to see a dolphin that close, so I’m happy that I was able to see it and capture the video as well.”
