Jimmy Doherty of Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park at Wherstead, Ipswich, has teamed up with local builders’ merchant and outdoor retailers Clarkes of Walsham to launch their Can You Ride Tandem event.

All funds raised by the two teams taking part will be for the Big Give’s EarthRaise campaign, which aims to help the British Swallowtail – the UK’s largest native butterfly – and its fragile Norfolk Broads habitat.

Jimmy Doherty – the founder of Jimmy’s Farm and patron of Space for the Wild – will ride tandem with his park director Stevie Sheppard.

Clarkes of Walsham managing director Richard Balls will ride with company sales manager Rob Fuller.

The two tandem teams will vie with each other in a friendly, action-driven challenge to plant milk parsley – an essential food plant for the British Swallowtail – across key areas of the Norfolk Broads.

Richard Balls said his team was up for the challenge.

“If we can use a bit of friendly rivalry to help restore habitat for one of the UK’s rarest butterflies, then we’re all in. But make no mistake – we’re aiming to win,” he said.

Jimmy said: Jimmy Doherty said: “It’s about having fun while doing something genuinely important for the Norfolk Broads.”

The British Swallowtail butterfly is found only in the Norfolk Broads, making it one of the UK’s rarest and most geographically restricted species.

Its survival depends entirely on mile parsley – a wetland plant which is its caterpillars’ only food source.
