The NHS has issued an alert to anyone who regularly takes prescription medication. A recent post on X, formerly Twitter, from the official NHS account reads: “With the bank holiday approaching, make sure you order your repeat prescription in advance.
Don’t get caught out this bank holiday weekend. Order your repeat prescriptions in good time.” Additional guidance on the NHS website clarifies that those with a repeat prescription can request their medicine without needing to visit a doctor each time.
It adds: “It’s important to request the prescription up to 5 working days before you need your medicine. You might be able to ask your pharmacy directly for your medicine if your GP has set this up (repeat dispensing). If not, you’ll need to order your medicines through a repeat prescription from your GP surgery.”

You can request a repeat prescription from your GP surgery by signing into the NHS App or the NHS website, using alternative online services or apps, or by getting in touch with your GP surgery. You can select a pharmacy to pick up your prescription from. Some pharmacies may provide delivery.
Numerous GP surgeries will be shut on Monday, May 4, as the UK marks the Early May Bank Holiday. It is therefore important to ensure you request any repeat prescriptions well in advance.
