Members of Greenock Boxing Club will take on boxers from Ontario-based club Blue Water Boxing on May 5.

The fights are yet to be finalised, but nine male and three female boxers will travel across the Atlantic to compete against fighters in Sarnia.

Greenock boxing coach Graham Baillie told the Tele they’re looking forward to the event.

He said: “All 12 will be fighting.

“We’re waiting the confirmation, but it’s likely that we’ll be boxing in two shows – one on the Friday and one on the Saturday.

“It’ll be back to back boxing.”

The clubs have met in Canada before, back in 2018, but most of the fighters making the trip in were not part of that trip.

Graham says the club is proud to have a strong female contingent flying this year, reflecting growing interest in the sport among women.

The fights promise to be hotly contested, just as they were when Greenock hosted the Canadians in last year.

Graham said: “We always look for close contests.

“We never want it to be a walk over or whatever it would be considered within the sport. You want it to be competitive fights.

“Scotland, particularly Boxing Alliance Scotland, prides itself on having really fair judges, and we’re just hoping for similar when we get ourselves over to Canada.”

Graham said the team are looking forward to seeing the venues hosting the fights after an incredible experience last time around.

He added: “The last time we went to Canada they hosted us in an aircraft hangar, which was amazing.

“For the fight, it was incredible. The photographs are beautiful.

“It’s quite big and glamorous.

“We hand out trophies. They hand out gold belts. It’s pretty cool when you’re there.”
