The latest merchandise for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surfaced online, revealing a brand-new look at one of the film’s main heroes. Despite Bruce Banner/Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo being confirmed to appear in the MCU sequel, no footage of the Hulk has been shown. A LEGO set already revealed a small peek at the Hulk and villains like Scorpion and Tombstone, but now a better view of the green monster comes from a popular toy company.
The account Funkoinfo shared an image of the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day-themed Funko Pops. The post not only reveals a new look at the Spider-Man suit, now battle-damaged, but also the Hulk. The Funko Pop Hulk features a ripped, tattered shirt over the body and torn brown pants, which feels like a homage to the classic 1978 The Incredible Hulk starring Lou Ferrigno. The new merchandise confirms the long-held fan theory that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would feature Bruce Banner losing control of his Hulk persona. This will mark the first time that the classic Hulk, often referred to as “Savage Hulk,” will be shown in the MCU since at least 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. Banner and the Hulk have been merged since Endgame, with the character appearing in both the post-credit scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and three episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
While Hulk is one of the leading names of the MCU, Marvel Studios cannot produce a standalone Hulk movie due to Universal Pictures’ agreement. In lieu of cutting Universal Pictures into the profits, Disney has instead had the Hulk appear as a supporting character in the MCU. Captain America: Brave New World also served as an unofficial The Incredible Hulk sequel. Ironically, instead of working with Universal Pictures on a Hulk film, Marvel is now using the character to oblige their deal with Sony Pictures to feature at least one MCU character in their Spider-Man films.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, featuring both Spider-Man and the Hulk, is a rather significant milestone. Despite both characters being part of the MCU, the two have never spoken or interacted, though they were both present at Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame. Both Hulk and Spider-Man were arguably Marvel’s two most famous superheroes before the MCU. Both had television series in the 1970s, though The Incredible Hulk’s ran for five seasons while The Amazing Spider-Man only lasted for one. Now, 64 years after both characters debuted in Marvel Comics, they will finally get to be in a movie together.
