Burleigh Pottery is facing an uncertain future

Jobs are safe at a Stoke-on-Trent pottery factory – for now. The assurance comes as administrators continue to look for a buyer for Derbyshire-based Denby Pottery which also owns Burgess and Leigh and operates Burleigh Pottery out of Middleport.
Dozens of jobs have already been lost at Denby Pottery. It followed the end of manufacturing at Denby.
Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council has reiterated its calls for the Government to do more to support the bealeagured pottery industry.
Council leader Jane Ashworth said: “We welcome the news that the administrators of Denby Pottery Company have confirmed there are no redundancies currently planned at Burgess and Leigh. This is a difficult time for the ceramics industry but we believe Burleigh Pottery – the Stoke-on-Trent business owned by Denby – is viable and has a full order book. We understand the administrators remain in discussions with interested parties regarding parts of the business.
“We’ve called for government support for Burleigh and the wider ceramics industry. It’s time for the government to act rapidly and drive investment on energy costs to support sustainable businesses like Burleigh. We will continue to press the case that the ceramics industry must be recognised as vital to the country’s future.”
