Catney, who was at the scene, told BBC News NI that provisions for those out of their homes would be made available.
“We are opening the island centre for anyone that’s put out of their house tonight.”
Independent councillor Gary Hynds who was also in the area said he had been “trying to reassure residents”.
“The council will have things in place for anyone that might need them.”
Sinn Féin councillor Declan Lynch said the alert had caused serious disruption and has “forced many families from their homes”.
“Lagan Valley Island has been opened to provide shelter for residents while the incident continues,” he added.
