The Pier to Pier Way, running between Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare, will benefit from additional funding from National Highways to support activities aimed at getting more people walking, cycling, and riding.

Alistair Ryder, managing demand and active travel team leader at National Highways, said: “We’re committed to investing in active travel routes for communities close to our roads.

“By making infrastructure, such as the pier-to-pier route, more accessible, we’re supporting people to choose different modes of travel which can have a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing.”

Part of the Coastal Towns Cycle Route, the Pier to Pier Way logged around 100,000 trips in its first year—double the original target of 50,000.

That total has now risen to 125,000 trips in just 18 months.

The funding will support community engagement in Clevedon, including the recruitment and training of three volunteer ride leaders.

Training will be provided free of charge, and volunteers are encouraged to contact sustainable.travel@n-somerset.gov.uk to get involved.

The funding will also go towards free adult cycle training, guided health walks, and ‘Dr Bike’ maintenance sessions.

Events will be held in May as part of North Somerset Walk Fest, and E-bike trials will also be available.

Cllr Hugh Malyan, cabinet member for highways and transport at North Somerset Council, said: “This funding comes at the perfect time, as we head into the spring and summer months.

“The Pier to Pier Way not only supports healthier travel choices but also helps boost our local economy by connecting communities and encouraging people to spend time and money in our coastal towns.”

National Highways previously invested £1.3 million in developing the route, including upgrades to river crossings at Tutshill Sluice.
