It’s fair to say Michael B Jordan is now a very big deal in Hollywood.

The success of his superb dual role in Sinners has cemented his ability to make truly interesting films that do very well indeed at the box office, and the supernatural shocker set in 1930s Mississippi is already being spoken about as one of the finest horrors this century.

Jordan’s partnership with his friend Ryan Coogler, who wrote, produced and directed Sinners, is proving particularly fruitful. The pair started out in 2013 with the award-winning Fruitvale Station, the true story of a young man’s death at the hands of police brutality, before they really captured the public’s attention with the 2015 boxing flick Creed.

That was the Rocky spin-off that took everyone by surprise in terms of just how successful it ended up being, taking in almost $200million at the box office and spawning two more movies, both of which starred Jordan. It was a hit with the critics, too, with Sylvester Stallone garnering an Academy Award nod and a Golden Globe win, and Jordan picking up several ‘Best Actor’ awards.

Thanks to the worldwide acclaim of Creed, Jordan landed a major role as the villain in Marvel’s mega-hit Black Panther, the 2018 blockbuster that also swept the board come award season, becoming the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time.

The actor, by then, was incredibly hot property in the industry, enabling him to pick and choose his jobs, and one of his next roles was in 2021’s Without Remorse, an action thriller based on the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy. It represented a chance for Jordan to live out some of the fantasies of his video game-playing childhood, where he would spend hours clutching a controller and shooting his way through the classic Ubisoft adaptations.

Asked about what prompted him to take on the role of Navy Seal John Clark in the movie, he told Collider, “I mean, honestly, as a kid, playing Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, [and] Ghost Recon, I think. And imagine myself in that role and playing that game for a long time. I think for things to come full circle and to be able to breathe life into this franchise and make it more representative of the world that we live in today. I think it was truly something I was looking forward to doing. Had all the bones of a great origin story, and it felt like the perfect fit.”

The Tom Clancy video games have been massive sellers over the years, with over 76 million copies sold across formats since Ubisoft acquired the rights back in 2008. One game, The Division, broke all records alone as it generated some $330m in sales in just the first week of release.

Jordan, meanwhile, gained some significant praise for his work on the film, although it failed to perform quite as well as hoped. It was enough for him to reprise his role as Clark in another Clancy movie, Rainbow Six, which is currently in development.

The actor went from strength to strength after that, appearing in the Black Panther follow-up, Wakanda Forever, and directing for the first time as he stepped behind the camera for Creed III. His long-standing creative partnership with Coogler shows no signs of abating either, as the twosome will work again on true-life story Wrong Answer, and Jordan is set to take the lead in a remake of the classic art heist The Thomas Crown Affair.

Interestingly, as a side quest, he is also going down the route forged by Ryan Reynolds and Tom Brady by investing in English soccer. He is now a part-owner of Premier League side AFC Bournemouth as a member of the Black Knight Football and Entertainment company.
