The programme will tell the stories of the victims and survivors of John Worboys, who was dubbed by the media as the ‘Black Cab Rapist’.
Worboys was convicted in 2009 for sexually assaulting twelve women between 2006 and 2008, and was convicted for attacks on four more women in 2019.
A series overview from ITV reads: “The drama focuses on the ordeal of Sarah (Aimée-Ffion Edwards) and Laila (Aasiya Shah), who reported sexual assaults by Worboys (Daniel Mays), and how the Metropolitan Police failed to thoroughly investigate their allegations, leading them to feel that they were just not believed.
“We see what countless women say they have to go through after reporting being raped, the indignity of multiple interviews and intimate evidence gathering, and how they can face sceptical lines of questioning from the police.”
Ahead of Believe Me airing, Aimée-Ffion Edwards discussed what she hoped the audience would take away from the series.
Speaking with ITV, she shared: “I hope the audience are ready to have more conversations about the way that we treat victims of domestic abuse and sexual harassment and rape, because there’s a long way to go.
“I think it’s so easy as a society to become very complacent, and I think stories like this being told can be incredibly powerful.
“I hope that it is powerful, and it does instigate conversations and change, but I also hope that the audience takes from it that there is also hope.
“You know, these women have overcome so much, and survival looks like many different things.
“Sometimes it’s putting one foot in front of the other and getting out of bed, and sometimes it’s suing the police.
“Both are incredible and worth celebrating.”
