The annual Fred Whitton Challenge, established in honour of its namesake after his death, returned on Sunday, May 10.

This year’s 106.8 mile route saw the roughly 2,500 competitors start at Grasmere and push through the climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose and Blea Tarn passes.

In a time of 5.23.14, Josh Hall was the fastest to complete the challenge this year. He was followed by Barnaby Walkingshaw (5.27.32) and David Scott (5.28.19).

Out of the women, Angela Curtis took home first position with a time of 6.46.39, pursued by Cassandra Baldi (6.47.51) and Anna Robertson (6.49.24).

As well as paying tribute to Fred Whitton, the event has fundraising at its heart with the majority of riders choosing a worthy cause to push them even further.

One of the key beneficiaries every year is St Mary’s Hospice of Ulverston, who celebrated those who crossed the finish line on Sunday.

A spokesperson commented: “Thank you for all your time, efforts and support to St Mary’s Hospice.

“Whether you’re cycling for someone special, to give back, a personal challenge or simply to support your community, it really does make a massive difference and we’re so grateful to have you taking part.

“We are so proud of all the riders out there taking part in the Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge, especially those supporting our work here.”

As well as being another source of donations, Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team helped keep participants safe and were on hand to deal with a couple of accidents.

They said: “While we were marshalling, two serious crashes occurred and needed our assistance – we wish the riders a speedy recovery.

“A big shout out to the passing family, and especially their young son, who helped out dealing with the second incident – you were a superstar.”
